After winning eight straight to start the Summit League season, South Dakota State is now coming into a week trying to start a win streak.  They’ll get their first crack at it Thursday night when the host Omaha.

Last week started with a victory at Fort Wayne, where the Jackrabbits held the #1 3-point shooting team in the conference without a long range basket in the first half grabbing an 18-point lead at the break before hanging on to win by 11.

SDSU was plus 16 on the boards and plus 13 on second chance points against the Mastodons.

Head coach Aaron Johnston told me he was very happy with the way his team defended Fort Wayne:

Two days later, the Jacks went toe-to-toe with a team that swept them in the regular season last year, IUPUI.

Against the Jags, SDSU established Mariah Clarin inside early, but gave up four first half 3-pointers to IUPUI’s Nicole Rogers and a 12-1 run late to trail by four at the half before DeAirra Goss took over in the second, leading the Jags to a 10-point win, snapping SDSU’s eight game winning streak.

Coach Johnson liked Clarin’s start early in that game, but says his offense didn’t take advantage of what IUPUI was giving them after that:

At home against Omaha Thursday night, the Jacks will be looking for a regular season sweep of the Mavericks after beating UNO by 14 last month in Nebraska.

SDSU only turned the ball over 10 times in that game and shot 54 percent in the second half, getting 21 points from Steph Paluch and 12 second half points from Clarin.

Coach Johnston knows a good shooting night is a key to beating the Mavericks:

Tipoff is 7:00pm Thursday in Brookings.
