South Dakota State put on a shooting clinic for the Summit League’s top team Thursday night, knocking down 50 percent from the floor and hit 10 3-pointers, handing Fort Wayne just their second loss in league play this season, 79-51.

The Jacks knew they would have to put up points-a-plenty against the top scoring team in the conference, as the Mastodons came in averaging 78 points per game, tops in three point shooting as well (63-of-156), and put up 82 on SDSU in a seven-point win in Indiana last month.

South Dakota State used outside shooting early to extend the Don defense, as Jake Bittle and Chad White knocked down 3-pointers, keying an early 7-0 SDSU run giving them a nine-point lead.

The outside success opened up the inside for the Jacks, and Cody Larson took advantage with a pair of dunks and a layin all in a span on 90 seconds, and the SDSU lead was 12.

Michael Kibiloski was one of the few IPFW players to get into a rhythm in the first half, hitting three 3-pointers for nine points, but the Jackrabbits, thanks to 56 percent shooting and five 3-pointers led at the break 43-30.

Any thoughts the visitors had about mounting a second half rally were quickly squashed by SDSU, as the Jacks scored 18 of the first 23 points of the second half, leading by as many as 32.

Jordan Dykstra led all scorers with 18 points, Larson had 17, White’s five 3-pointers gave him 15 points.

Fort Wayne, in the top 10 in the nation in both field goal and 3-point percentage, shot just 35 percent at Frost Arena, 25 percent from behind the 3-point arc.

The Jackrabbits outrebounded the Mastodons by 12, and outscored IPFW in the paint by 10.  In the first meeting between the two, the Dons scored 42 of their 82 points inside.

South Dakota State (13-10/5-3) hosts IUPUI Saturday at 4:00pm in Brookings.
