A Sioux Falls man convicted of sex trafficking will serve 30 years in prison for forcing a 14-year-old girl into prostitution.

In April, 34-year-old Emmanuel Nyuon was found guilty of sex trafficking of a child by force, fraud or coercion and conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking of a child. During the trial, lawyers said that Nyuon used ads on an escort website to sell the girl to men. It was the website backpage.com that informed authorities when they saw the ad offering escort services with they they felt was an underage girl.

Police begin their investigation in Nyuon in Spring 2011 and discovered a criminal organization that was also selling drugs.

According to the Argus Leader, Nyuon tried to use his past life in the Sudan as a defense:

[James Eirinberg, Nyuon’s lawyer] also asked the judge for leniency in light of Nyuon’s difficult childhood as a refugee from Sudan. Eirinberg said his client suffered from sexual assault growing up and from never having a solid father figure in his life.

The Associated Press reported that the judge said Nyuon’s past did not excuse his actions, but she also found that the case did not warrant the maximum sentence.

In addition to the prison time, Nyuon was also fined $5,000.
