The Sioux Falls Skyforce and Miami Heat are now partners as the two teams look ahead to the 2013-14 campaign. It is a place that the Skyforce had hoped to be after openly searching for the hybrid-type one-to-one affiliation in the NBA Development League.

Owner/President Mike Heineman says the Miami Heat will control on-the-court activity with players and coaches fitting the scheme of the parent franchise. Sioux Falls gets the benefit of focusing just on putting people in the seats to see the product. Considering that Miami is locked in a battle the San Antonio Spurs for an NBA title, the announcement is mainly a way to bring more excitement to the Finals.

Heineman says the lockout and subsequent Collective Bargaining Agreement that came as a result has given the NBADL more credence as a basketball entity. More player movement between the leagues are allowed and the NBA salary cap forces teams to think young instead of going with the veteran player.

The hybrid partnership model in the NBADL is the preferred way for the Skyforce to remain as a franchise in Sioux Falls. The other widely used path is for NBA teams to own their affiliate which would have most likely meant the days would have been numbered for the D-League in South Dakota’s largest city. However, modern attractions like the Sanford Pentagon facility and the goodwill created over the years of professional basketball in Sioux Falls were alluring to the Heat who joined 12 other NBA teams in a singular relationship. Plus the wide distance between the two cities could expose a player’s character.

The fine details will roll into place by the end of June as the NBA Draft commences. First indications that change has arrived is the team has changed the colors to match the Miami Heat.

KSOO-AM continues to be the radio affiliate of the Sioux Falls Skyforce as the 25th season arrives this fall.
