RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Recent indirect threats against a Rapid City Council member have prompted police to recommend security upgrades for the City Council chambers.

Assistant Police Chief Karl Jegeris says a person with mental health issues recently made indirect threats to a council member and a city employee because he was upset with the council. Jegeris says the email threats mentioned weapons.

Authorities intervened and with help from others managed to arrange mental health treatment for the person. But Jegeris says the incident also prompted authorities to examine security in the council chambers.

The Rapid City Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1ePSotN ) that the school board, which shares the chambers, has agreed to help pay for upgrades, which could cost up to $20,000.
