Jon Krawczynski on the Hiring of Flip Saunders as Coach, and on Kevin Love’s future
Associated Press writer Jon Krawczynski joined Jeff Thurn on Friday’s edition of Overtime.
Krawczynski (@APkrawczynski) covers the the NBA, and is an Vikings, Twins, Gophers, and Wild reporter for the AP in Minneapolis.
Thurn asks Krawczynski what his reaction was as Minnesota Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations Flip Saunders named himself as the team’s next head coach:
“Yeah, I know a lot of people said this was always going to happen, and the be the way this was going to go as soon as Rick Adelman left, but in following the situation and talking to the people I trust, I think Flip did go through a thorough search, and tried to find the right candidate to replace Adelman that wasn’t him. What he kept running into was what we all knew was a problem, with Kevin Love’s contract situation, and the uncertainty surrounding his status, a lot of the big name guys weren’t going to want to commit to this project with Love not sure if was going to be here or not. So, they decided that Flip was the right guy for the job, and it is kind of hard to argue their weren’t a lot of highly qualified candidates available to take this job. So, here we are, back where everyone expected to be.”
Krawczynski on where the Timberwolves sit with Love’s contract situation and if the hiring of Saunders as head coach helps the All-Star forward stay in Minnesota:
“Well, I don’t think it has a lot of effect on his future. I think that he’s (Love) already made up his made, that he wants to go elsewhere, and he’s been in this league for six years and they have not made the playoffs once yet. I think he believes that his chances to end that drought are going to be somewhere else, and so, I do expect him to be moved at some point this summer, whether it’s on draft night at the end of this month, or right after free agency starts in July. I just think you are not going to see Love in Minnesota anymore. It’s beyond repair at this point.”
