Giving Mrs. Jones a Gun Might Help

FILE: Schoolhouse

Every year the folks in Pierre get together and argue about things, a lot of things. But usually the most talk is about schools and education. Everyone has their idea about the kids, because after all, the politicians tell us year after year after year that “the kids are our future!”

Now, lets set aside the fact that South Dakota teachers are either 48th, 49th, 50th or 51st (gotta count the District of Columbia) in the nation in teacher pay. We all know that South Dakota is a great place to live, and besides, all those other states pay waaaay more taxes than we do. We live here pert near free, so teachers don’t need more money.

But apparently, according to this story from the Associated Press, it’s not money our teacher, Mrs. Jones, needs. It’s a gun.

(AP) – The deadly school shooting in Connecticut has prompted a South Dakota legislator to begin drafting a bill that would allow teachers, administrators and even janitors with concealed weapons permits to bring their guns to school.

Rep. Betty Olson, a Republican from Prairie City, tells The Associated Press that she feels fewer people would have been killed in Newtown, Conn., had someone inside the school been armed. Twenty-six people, including 20 children ages 6 and 7, were shot to death in the Friday rampage.

So this is what we’ve come to. Now, rather than educating our children, our first priority in the school house is to keep them alive.

To do that, Mrs. Jones needs to carry a pistol. Principal Smith needs to carry a Glock. And our friend, ‘ol Ben the janitor there, he’s carrying a lot more than that broom! Oh, and Coach Wilson? That’s more than a towel he’s roaming the sideline with.

More guns. In schools. How about churches? Hospitals? Day Cares?
