GBB: Shocker at Lincoln; #1 Warriors fall, Hugunin Injured

Ball in hoop netWhere to start?

#1 Sioux Falls Washington couldn’t survive another poor shooting night, this time it did them in as they dropped their first game of the season. They shoot only 17 percent in the first half, didn’t convert a bucket in the second quarter and lost 44-39 to Lincoln.

The Warriors beat Lincoln 51-33 in December, eight games ago and won shooting only 22 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Pats by eight. Tuesday night, Nate Malchow’s team converted 12 field goals and shot 24.5 percent and was out hustled on the glass 42-30.

Washington (11-1) started Mic Mayer for senior Emma Hanson who was held out with a concussion she suffered last week against Watertown.

#5 Patriots (7-3) held an early 7-4 lead only to see the Warriors take an 11-10 lead after one quarter. The game was tied three times in the first half, the last time at 14-all but the Patriots used an 11-0 run to stretch their lead to 23-14 at half. The Warriors were 4-of-24 in the first half from the field.

Senior point guard Darby Hugunin was the other big story. In the first meeting against SFW, she struggled, 1-of-13 from the floor and five points. Tuesday night, Hugunin’s first half netted her 13 points, four rebounds, two assists, one steal and only one turnover. She was 5-of-9 from the floor and perfect in two tries from beyond the arc.

As is her way, she chased a loose ball 45 feet towards the west end line at Lincoln’s gym and slammed into the matted wall. This happened midway through the fourth quarter with her team up 39-31. Hugunin broke her wrist. She may have surgery.

Lincoln senior center Cera Ledbetter, led the Pat with 14 points and seven rebounds said they are playing a much better game defensively and gradually have become a much better team on the boards.

The Patriots have won three in a row and six out of their last seven. Only loss in that stretch was a two-point home loss to O’Gorman, when the Pats had a 14-point third quarter lead.
