Family Park in Sioux Falls to Get a Face-Lift Through the Generosity of the Soukup Family
Family Park is a cooperative effort between the City of Sioux Falls and the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish & Parks. The park was created to provide a place close to Sioux Falls where people, and especially families with kids, can go to learn, practice, and enjoy the sport of fishing.
Soukup Construction generously donated the land and ponds to the City of Sioux Falls in 2009 for the construction of Family Park, the city’s first and only urban fishery. Since the park’s opening in fall/winter 2009, it has seen some of the most fishing per acre in South Dakota. The park has also proved to be a popular destination for people to get a little taste of the country within the city limits, with the nature trails around the ponds and natural areas to explore.
The Soukup family has continued to cherish and enhance the park since its opening with gifts of numerous trees and donated labor, equipment, and materials.
To celebrate their 50th year in business, Soukup Construction would like to further enhance the park by holding a workday on Saturday, August 3, to complete a number of improvement projects. The projects were identified by Park staff, GF&P, and Soukup Construction’s team. The work will be performed by more than 60 volunteers from their workforce at no charge to the City. In order to complete all the work identified and have the people and heavy machinery working safely, the park will need to be closed for the workday.
“This work will allow the Parks and Recreation Department to stretch the taxpayer dollars further and build out the masterplan for Family Park,” says Don Kearney, Director of Parks and Recreation.
Potential Soukup Improvement Projects:
- Construct east side berm/trail on Cousin’s Pond.
- Construct fishing jetties along the east trail on Cousin’s Pond.
- Grade parking lots and access roads.
- Grade washout areas at various locations in the park.
- Remove material from the pond at previous washout areas.
- Create a storm sewer outlet/fish barrier (City and GF&P provide materials).
- Remove debris in Cherry Creek where accessible by equipment.
- Place topsoil for future dog park location (if time allows).
A Soukup Construction press conference has been scheduled for August 3 at 9 a.m. for additional details of the project plan and the donation.
After the Soukup Construction work is accomplished, Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation has even more plans for improvements to Family Park. Before the end of the year through the 2013 City Capital Improvement Project, the following will be completed:
- Restroom building.
- 20′ x 40′ picnic shelter (west lot).
- 12′ x 12′ picnic shelter (south trail).
- Water main service.
- Sanitary sewer service.
- Main power feed to park.
- Asphalt surfacing (if budget allows).
Family Park is located at 300 North Minnehaha County Road 139, just a half mile north of 12th Street on the Tea/Ellis Road.
