David Fincher’s ’20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’ Could Set Sail with Brad Pitt

We’ve been hearing about David Fincher tackling ’20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’ for a couple of years now, and it it’s already gone through a number of writers, including Andrew Kevin Walker, Scott Z. Burns, and is currently being worked on by Steve Zaillian. But it looks like Disney getting ready to move forward as they’ve placed a hold on the director for the next three months, and it sounds like they’re courting Brad Pitt to play the lead.

By the lead, we mean harpoonist Ned Land, the role played by Kirk Douglas in the 1954 version, even though earlier iterations of this project seemed to focus more on Captain Nemo, who was played by James Mason in the previous film. This all comes from Variety,  and it sounds like it’s time for the project to move forward or get off the pot, as it were.

Though nothing is confirmed, Pitt and Fincher working together wouldn’t surprise us as the duo have had a great working relationship since 1995′s ‘Se7en,’ and made ‘Fight Club’ and ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ in the years since, and it’s likely they see themselves having a similar relationship as Martin Scorsese has with Robert De Niro.

Having Fincher on hold is promising, as it suggests he will focus all his attention on the project, but we’re guessing the biggest hold up will be money. ’20,000 Leagues’ is an underwater adventure famous for having a giant squid, and that means that this is likely to have a budget over $200 Million dollars.
