DEADWOOD, S.D. (AP) – Deadwood commissioners have approved the purchase of four artifacts tied to the early gold camp days, including what might be the first wanted poster ever produced in the Black Hills.

The poster offered $500 for the capture of the person responsible for killing stage coach driver Johnny Slaughter during a robbery. The Rapid City Journal reports that the other artifacts are an 1898 map of the Black Hills’ northern ore district, a saddle bag made by 1902-06 mayor Edward McDonald and an 1894-98 office docket of attorney Henry Frawley.

Historic Preservation Officer Kevin Kuchenbecker says the city will pay $8,512 to Dakota Plains Auctions of Lead. He says the items will be put on public display in a museum and will provide additional insights into early Deadwood history.
