Angelina Jolie Signs on to Direct a Project That’s Older Than Her

Though she is one of the most beautiful and talented actresses working today, Angelina Jolie seems more interested in working behind the scenes of late. Her directorial debut ‘In The Land Of Blood And Honey’ may have got lost in 2011′s year-end awards shuffle, but she’s locked up her next project, which isn’t ‘50 Shades of Grey‘ as was once rumored.

No, it’s ‘Unbroken,’ the story of Olympian-turned-WWII POW Louis Zamperini, according to Deadline Hollywood. Zamperini went to the 1936 Olympics as a distance runner, and though he didn’t earn a medal he was able to steal Hitler’s flag at the end of the events. He was also a  bombardier in WWII, and when his plane was shot down, he and two other crew members were cast adrift in a life raft for forty-seven days, only to be caught by the Japanese once they reached land.

Zamperini, who is still alive, has seen his life story be optioned for over half a century, with the project (at one point) set to star Tony Curtis as his follow-up to 1960′s  ‘Spartacus.’ It seems interest has been renewed with the publishing of Laura Hillenbrand’s book ‘Unbroken,’ which is what led Jolie to the project. There is a finished script, so we wouldn’t be surprised if this goes into production shortly with it being a big Oscar movie for next year.
