Coyotes Take First Two Of Series Against Jacks
Allie Daly had eight RBIs in the doubleheader, and hit a game-winning single with two outs and the bases loaded to give the Coyotes game one. It was Daly’s lone hit in that game, while freshman first baseman Yvon Minogue was 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs.
Madison Frain received the win in game one. She came in at the top of the seventh after SDSU’s Elyse Eitel tied the game 6-6 with an RBI single. Erica Denney pitched for most of the game, pitching for four innings and giving up South Dakota State’s only three earned runs.
Daly was 2-for-3 in game two with two homeruns and seven RBI. Lindsey Boyd, Minogue, Christine Broders and Katelyn Wudel all added two RBI in the nightcap.
The Coyotes never trailed in the game with Boyd hitting a lead-off homerun in the bottom of the first. USD scored six runs in both the second and third innings to lead 13-2 after three.
South Dakota State scored the next 10 runs to cut it to 13-12, with five runs coming in both the fourth and fifth innings. The Jacks cashed in on three Coyote errors, only recording six hits combined during those innings.
South Dakota responded in the bottom of the fifth with three runs, with two coming off a single from Broders. The runs would end up being the difference in the game. South Dakota State would threaten in the top of the seventh by scoring three runs and putting the tying run on first, but Erica Denney struck out Jessica Markanich to end the game and earn her first save of the season.
The win in game two clinched a point for South Dakota in the South Dakota Showdown Series presented by the South Dakota Corn Council. South Dakota State leads the year-long series 9-7.
South Dakota will finish its series with South Dakota State Saturday at noon.
