Did you happen to catch the Academy Awards last weekend? I saw the recaps of the show which is more than I saw of the movies that were nominated. I'm sure "Frozen" was a great kids movie! I'm sure Matthew McConaughey gave a awesome performance.

I might have paid more attention to those movies if they have been filmed around here. Found 12 films that you may or may not have known that were films in Minnesota.

  • Airport (1971)

    Starring: Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin

    Movie is about a bomber on board an airplane, an airport almost closed by snow, and various personal problems of the people involved. Filmed at MSP Airport.

    According to IMDb, the field and terminal scenes were filmed entirely at the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport due to the abundance of snowfall during the winter months there, although at first the film's producers were forced to use bleached sawdust as a supplement, to make up for the lack of falling snow, until a snowstorm hit the Twin Cities area during the production of the film.

  • Untamed Heart (1993)

    Starring: Christian Slater, Marisa Tomei

    Tells the story of a young woman, always unlucky in love, finally finding true love in a very shy young man.

    Shot in Minneapolis near downtown, Northeast, the U of M, and the Mississippi River. It had intended to be set in New Jersey, but after its writer/director/producer did some searching in Minneapolis, they decided to shoot it there.

    A story about the life of a twenty dollar bill as it weaves in and out of the various lives of several people.

    Several scenes were shot in downtown Minneapolis while the rest of the film was film in L.A.

    A lifelong feud between two neighbors since childhood, only gets worse when a new female neighbor moves across the street.

    The film was meant to be set in New Jersey but was actually filmed at Eden Prairie's very own Eden Prairie Center mall instead.

    Shooting locations include the Cities as well as rural parts, Ground Zero nightclub in northeast, Minneapolis convention center, Stillwater Lift Bridge, and the University of St. Thomas.

    A fictionalized account of the first major successful sexual harassment case in the United States -- Jenson vs. Eveleth Mines, where a woman who endured a range of abuse while working as a miner filed and won the landmark 1984 lawsuit in Minnesota.

    Starring: Michael Stuhlbarg, Richard Kind

    A Midwestern mathematics teacher, watches his life unravel over multiple sudden incidents. Though seeking meaning and answers amidst his turmoils, he seems to keep sinking.

    The Coen brothers, who are from the twin cities, wrote and directed this film. This dark comedy was primarily shot in Bloomington, as well as St. Louis Park, Northfield, Richfield, Rockford, Roseville, and Minneapolis.
