It was only an e-mail, and kind of an advisory one at that, but there it was:

Annual Snow Alert TEST from the City of Sioux Falls.

It's just what we all need on a sunny November day. We can fool ourselves and talk about how nice the weather has been, but one look at the calendar drives it home.

It's officially autumn, but winter is on the way.

The e-mail was to let me, a snow alert subscriber, know that they're making sure their alert system is working properly.

There are other ways, of course, including Twitter, Facebook and the city website,

I like the change of seasons as much as the next guy. But maybe the worst thing about winter is overnight snow, when I leave home around 4:15 or 4:20 in the morning to drive to work and all I see is white.

I can hardly wait...
