Woman’s Assets Gave Gangster Al Capone His Nickname, Not Crime

I love movies and my collection is quite large. One of my groups is gangster movies.

My co-worker Tony Wright and I were just talking about the best gangster shows of all time. We both agreed that ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘Casino’ were a couple of the best.

Gangsters all had nicknames. And there has to be a reason how each one of them good it.

I just had to look into one. I chose one of the most notorious of all, Al ‘Scarface’ Capone. I found that acts of crime had nothing to do with it.

In 1917, Al Capone was working as a bouncer for New York mob boss Frankie Yale in Coney Island. He got into an altercation with a New York mobster named Frank Galluccio because Capone kept staring at Galluccio’s sister.

The story goes that Capone told Galluciio’s sister, ‘Honey, you got a nice ass and I mean that as a compliment, believe me.’

Galluccio overheard this and went crazy and demanded an apology which Capone refused, insisting it was all a joke. Galluccio became even madder and slashed Capone three times across the left side of his face.

There was another scar that came many years later for Capone. That one didn’t come from crime either. It had to do with going for a haircut of all things.

During his early months at Alcatraz, Capone made an enemy by showing his disregard for the prison social order when he cut in line while prisoners were waiting for a haircut. James Lucas, a Texas bank robber serving 30 years, reportedly confronted the former syndicate leader and told him to get back at the end of the line.

When Capone asked if he knew who he was, Lucas reportedly grabbed a pair of the barber’s scissors and, holding them to Capone’s neck, answered: ‘Yeah, I know who you are, greaseball. And if you don’t get back to the end of that f***ing line, I’m gonna know who you were.’

Capone was admitted into the prison hospital with a minor wound and released a few days later.
