A Wagner woman will spend time in prison for drug offenses and for failing to report the death of a child.
The case of 29-year-old Laurie Cournoyer was the first conviction under the South Dakota version of Caylee’s Law since it took effect last July 1.
Attorney General Marty Jackley says Cournoyer was sentenced to ten years for possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), five years for keeping a place for use or sale of controlled substances, and five years for failure to report death of a child.
The sentences are to run consecutively.
The charges against Cournoyer stemed from an incident last July 4 involving the death of a 2 year-old child whose body was found in a closet.
Cournoyer was sentenced to ten years with five years suspended for possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) that stemmed from the possession of meth while she was incarcerated at the Charles Mix County Jail in Lake Andes.
