Wolters Watch: Bucks Season Ends Wednesday Night (Finally!)

Former South Dakota State guard Nate Wolters’ rookie season in the NBA will be forever linked with a lousy basketball team.

Regardless of how the Milwaukee Bucks finish the 2013-14 season against the Atlanta Hawks Wednesday night in Wisconsin, they are guaranteed to finish with the worst record in the NBA this season (15-66 with one game left). The Bucks have also locked up one of the 30 worst winning percentages in league history.

One thing Milwaukee perfected this season was building a losing streak.  The Bucks endured skids of 11, nine, eight, six (twice), and five games during the year.

Those struggles actually paved the way for Wolters, the 38th overall pick in last year’s draft, to get some quality playing time, before his season ended with a fractured left hand against Golden State March 20th.

Even missing the final 13 games of the regular season, Wolters was one of just five Bucks players to start 30 or more games.  His 31 starts were part of 58 total appearances in the first 69 games.

The all-time leading scorer in South Dakota State history finished his NBA rookie season averaging 7.2 points, 3.2 assists, and 2.65 rebounds in 22.6 minutes per game.

Wolters shot 44 percent from the floor, 67 percent from the free throw line.

His season highs:

Minutes: 41 – at Orlando, January 31st

Points: 19 – vs. Houston, February 8th

Field Goal percentage: 83% (5-for-6) – at Minnesota, March 11th)

Assists: 10 – vs. Toronto, November 2nd

Rebounds: 8 – vs. Cleveland, November 6th

Reflecting on his rookie season this week, Wolters told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal:

I think we’ve all got to improve.

I’m sure we’ll add a couple pieces and we’ll be a lot more competitive next year.

No one wants to have a season like this.

I mean, I don’t care who you are.

If you’re competitive, you don’t want a season like this.

It’s been tough, a lot of losses.

That should give us motivation for the summer to work hard and have a better year next year.

One silver lining to this kind of season, a lottery pick in this summer’s draft.  That has Wolters optimistic about what’s ahead for this franchise:

We’re going to get a great player, regardless what happens (in the lottery).

That will be exciting to get another guy, a piece to the puzzle.

I’m really looking forward to summer league and playing with him, whoever we get.
