Will Wichita State End Up a One Seed in NCAA Tournament?

Wichita State improved to 30-0 last night with a 69-49 win over Bradley.

In fact, the Shockers haven’t lost since last year’s Final Four against Louisville.

That’s incredible, but as the NCAA tournament nears, their schedule could hold them back from being a one-seed in the Big Dance.

Their biggest win is over 10th-ranked St. Louis (25-2), and have two other quality wins are over Tennessee (16-11), and Brigham Young (20-10).

The Shockers may not have too many big wins, but Gregg Marshall’s team is solid. Four of Wichita State’s leading scorers returned from last year’s Final Four squad. That’s important for March, as experience builds confidence.

Senior Cleanthony Early is their top scorer averaging 15.7 points and 5.9 rebounds. Sophomore Ron Baker averages 13.1 points, sophomore Fred VanVleet averages 12.3 points and junior Tekele Cotton averages 10.5 points.

Wichita State does a nice job of balancing the attack, and doesn’t have just one star. However, offensively, they are an average team. The Shockers average 75.6 points per game (70th in NCAA), and shoot 45.5% from the field as a team (115th in the NCAA).

Defensively, the Shockers are a superb basketball program. They hold opponents to 60.5 points per game (14th in NCAA).

Wichita State is the only undefeated team left, and the No. 2 team in country. The Shockers did receive 14 first-place votes.

So, should the Shockers be a one-seed come March?

Their resume isn’t the sharpest, but their isn’t anything shocking about Wichita State. The Shockers do hold most of the ingredients for a top team and could be a scary team come March. They are experienced, balanced, and a great defensive team.

What do you think?
