Vikings Stay Alive In NSIC Tournament With Win Over UMD
ST. CLOUD, MN — Kye Winter tossed his third straight complete game victory on the mound, in as many starts, leading No. 3 seed Augustana to a 4-2 victory over seventh-seeded Minnesota Duluth in the NSIC Baseball Tournament in St. Cloud, Minn. on Thursday.
Augustana (37-17) stays alive in the NSIC Baseball Tournament and will play Bemidji State Friday morning at 11 a.m. The Vikings knocked Minnesota Duluth out of the conference tournament as the Bulldogs finish their season at 14-26.
Winter scattered six UMD hits and allowed two runs but he forced 16 ground ball outs and struck out two batters while walking just one to improve to 4-2 on the season.
Marcus O’Neill and Jack Goihl each went 2-for-5 with an RBI for Augustana at the plate. Brian Duxbury and Zach Dibble each drove in a run in the contest for the Vikings.
Augustana scored two runs on three hits in the top of the second inning to give the Vikings an early 2-0 lead. Tony Viger started the inning off with a double to right center and moved up to third base on a ground ball out to second base by Jack Goihl.
Brian Duxbury drove in the game’s first run on an RBI single to left field and then got into scoring position himself by swiping second base. Dibble then cracked an RBI double to the right center field gap to score Duxbury and give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.
After Dibble’s double, Jake Petersen walked to put two runners on but UMD pitcher Adam Zwak (3-3) struck out O’Neill and got Hewes to ground out to second to end the inning.
The Bulldogs evened things up in the home half of the second inning scoring two runs on four hits. Kyle Comer started things off for UMD with a one out double down the right field line. Two singles later, Comer made it a 2-1 game scoring on an RBI single by Evan Walker. Two batters later, Lucas Steinbach tied the game at 2 with an RBI single through the left side of the infield.
The Vikings regained the lead at 3-2 in the top of the third inning on on RBI single by Jack Goihl, scoring Alex Fink who reached on a fielder’s choice earlier in the inning. Zwak was able to get out of the inning without any further damage as the Vikings left the bases loaded in the inning.
Petersen led off the top of the sixth inning with a double to right center and came around to score as Marcus O’Neill followed suit with a double to right center to score Petersen and give the Vikings two-run cushion at 4-2. The Bulldog pitchers stopped the Vikings from scoring any more runs in the inning as Augustana left the bases loaded once again. The Vikings finished the game with 14 runners left on base.
Comer singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning for UMD but Augustana’s Winter would slam the door shut, not allowing a hit over the final three and two thirds innings of the game.
