Vikings Close Out Regular Season With 10-3 Win Against Royals

SIOUX FALLS, SD — Augustana baseball closed out the regular season in style on Friday night with a 10-3 win over Grace University in non-conference action. With the victory, the Vikings improved to 36-14 on the year, while the Royals fell to 25-15 with the loss.

Ryan Hamilton (5-1) picked up his fifth win of the season for Augustana. Hamilton gave the Vikings two innings on the hill, and allowed one run on two hits. The Spearfish native also fanned two in the contest.

Jacob James gave the Vikings a good day at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance that included scoring three runs and hitting two doubles.

Tony Viger went a perfect 2 for 2 and had two RBI and scored a career-tying four runs for Augustana. Viger smashed his NCAA-leading 26th double of the year in the game.

Kye Winter had a two-hit day for the Vikings, his 15th multi-hit game on the year.

Grace jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning after Andres Enriquez doubled to left center to score David Vega. It would be the Royals only lead of the ballgame.

Augustana answered back by tying the ballgame up at 2-2 in the bottom half of the third on a Viger sac fly to right field that scored James.

The Vikings made their move in the middle innings, scoring seven runs combined in the fifth and sixth innings on five hits, capped off by Jack Goihl’s double down the left field line that drove in Alex Fink, making it 9-3 Augustana.

The Vikings pushed their lead to seven runs in the bottom of the eighth after Alex Beals got the easiest RBI there is to get by getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring Viger across the plate and making it 10-3.

Viger closed down the game for good in the top of the ninth to pick up his first save of 2014, giving up just one hit inning. The Sioux Falls native got Carlos Ochoa to ground out to Fink at third base to end the game, giving Augustana the victory.

The Vikings return to action on Wednesday with the first round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament at 2 p.m.
