Two Films, Special Concert Wrap Up America’s Music Series at Siouxland Libraries

Siouxland Libraries’ program series “America’s Music: A Film History of Our Popular Music from Blues to Bluegrass to Broadway” concludes the week of June 23 with the final two films and a special concert at the historic Orpheum Theater.

A film session at the Main Library Sunday, June 23, features blues and gospel music with selections from Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues: Episode 1: Feel Like Going Home, and Say Amen, Somebody. Doors open at 1:15 p.m., with a live performance by Bobby Gripp and Friends before the film. Library meeting rooms will be open for the program, but the rest of the library will remain closed.

On Wednesday, June 26, at 7 p.m., the library will sponsor “America’s Music Live!” at the historic Orpheum Theater, featuring Tom Peterson & Charley Smith and Union Grove Pickers. The local favorites will perform a concert of folk and bluegrass hits. The show is free with limited seating. Reserve tickets by calling 367-8720 or going online at

The final session of the film series on Thursday, June 27, at the Main Library focuses on country and bluegrass with the documentary High Lonesome: The Story of Bluegrass Music. Fiddler Krystal Pederson will give a live performance at 6 p.m., followed by the film and discussion at 6:30 p.m.

“America’s Music” is a project by the Tribeca Film Institute in collaboration with the American Library Association, Tribeca Flashpoint, and the Society for American Music. It has been made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the Human Endeavor, with additional funding from local sponsors: the South Dakota Humanities Council, the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, the South Dakota Arts Council, and the Mary Chilton DAR Foundation.
