TV Newscasters Blink More
Here’s an interesting “did you know” about television newscasters – they blink more.
According to a Japanese study, newscasters blink almost once a second on average, compared with once every four seconds for the average relaxed viewer.
The study group was comprised of 12 female newscasters and 12 male newscasters. For comparison, researchers also analyzed the blinking patterns of nearly 100 volunteers under relaxed conditions.
The most extreme case found among the study group was that of one newscaster who blinked, on average – 176 times per minute!
One researcher explained their findings this way,
“Newscasters are presumably under pressure not to make errors, and the environment in the TV studios is bright and dry.”
It’s also believed that frequent blinking is thought to indicate nervousness.
So, when you go home tonight and watch your favorite newscast, pay attention to how many times the newscaster blinks. You may be surprised.
