Carol Muller and Stacey Tieszen from Minnehaha County Human Services revealed the meaning of "The Magic Number is 1310" Tuesday on Viewpoint University.

1310 is the hourly rate a single person needs to make working 40 hours a week to be able to afford a modest single bedroom apartment in Sioux Falls. $13.10 per hour. Anything less than that and the person will be spending more than 30% for their housing which will put other normal budget items in jeopardy.

The harsh reality in our area is the fact that most retail and service industry jobs don't pay that amount even after some experience, much less as a starting salary. That reality forces individuals to work two or more jobs, none of which will pay the $13.10 needed to make ends meet with some form of either government or family subsidy.

Minnehaha County currently spends over $1,000,000 a year of local tax money to assist in housing for people not making $13.10 per hour.

Wednesday on Viewpoint University, Greg Johnson, manager of the local Dept of Labor will tell us about jobs in our area that pay the $13.10 and what qualifications a person needs to be eligible for them.

Carol Muller estimates that around 1,000-1,500 are served by Minnehaha County monthly.
