WHITEWOOD, S.D. (AP) - The western South Dakota town of Whitewood has named a 20-year law-enforcement veteran as its new police chief.

Mayor Deb Schmidt announced at a Monday City Council meeting that Robert Steenholdt will replace Randy Milburn, who submitted a letter of resignation last week after 13 months on the job.

The Black Hills Pioneer reports that Steenholdt lived in Spearfish for 12 years and the Lake Madison area for eight years.

The 59-year-old Steenholdt tells the paper that he'd missed the Black Hills and wanted to return. He's lived in Whitewood since July.
