PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – South Dakota’s public universities are changing their teacher education programs so students will spend a full year teaching in a school district before graduating.

The state Board of Regents says college students training to be teachers traditionally have been student teachers for a semester before graduating. Black Hills State University has been requiring those students to be student teachers for an entire year, and other universities are adopting that requirement.

Officials say university faculty members are working to redesign bachelor’s degree programs for teachers to take into consideration a full year of student teaching.
