Small Town of the Day-White Lake, SD
They talk about flyover states. How you can travel from one end of the country and just pass over some places you otherwise would never see. For many people, White Lake, South Dakota might be a ‘drive by town.’ If they do, it’s kind of a shame.
When my dad was living in Chamberlain, SD I made it a point to take ‘old 16′ several times on my way back and forth to the river city. By doing that I was able to get a chance to stop in once in a while to see White Lake.
One of the coolest views I’ve ever seen in South Dakota is the look from high on what I call ‘windmill hill’ to the north of White Lake, coming back south to the town. It’s wide open, spectacular South Dakota Prairie.
The towns web-site says it best. White Lake, somewhere between the 21st century technoscape and the American West. It’s true, with all the technology of wind power to the north, mixed with the prairie, it’s truly impressive.
White Lake is an interstate town that deserves a stop. It deserves a look. My brother Nelson told me, ‘it’s really a shame that they have rest stops on interstates, because there are so many places that you can stop in, get a few snacks and get a feel for the country that your driving through.’ I have to agree.
White Lake School District has everything in place should you decide to move there. And being 4 hours from the hills and a couple hours from Sioux Falls, it’s centrally located, ‘away from the rat race of bigger city living.
