Small Town of the Day – Avon, SD
Avon, South Dakota is our Small Town of the Day today! Small town, Big heart! The towns website does a nice job setting today’s story up.
Avon, SD is located along State Highway 50 in the Southeastern corner of the state. With a population of 590 (2010 Census). There is a small town feel as soon as you drive down Main Street.
The city has made several recent improvements to the town, the pool has updated and a new pool house was built in 2005.
A new field was add to the Softball/Baseball complex in 2006, and in the summer of 2008 new park equipment was purchased and installed by the Chamber and the city installed edging and installed a sand base under all the equipment.
The new Fire Hall was completed in 2009 and City moved out of the old city shop on Main and added to the existing fire hall building.
Wedding dances and family get together often are the first thing that come to my mind when I think of small towns. Avon, has a story like that. We were in town for a wedding a few years back, (Rod and Arlene) and were staying at the local hotel that’s right along the highway. I think we had booked most of the rooms from the hotel for the weekend and if not, I apologize for the disturbance. Like I said there might have been a little partying going on at the reception and if you would have drove by you might have caught me and a couple of my brothers in law hitting golf balls across the highway outside the hotel room late that night.
No windows were broken, just a few golf balls that are still out in the field across the highway. Small towns feature fun like that.
According to the city website, the town has some well know former residents too.
Former U. S. Senator George McGovern’s father, Reverend J. C. McGovern, served here as pastor during the 1920s at the Wesleyan Church. 1972 Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern was born and raised in Avon until he was 6, when his family moved to Mitchell. Just heard from Peny Mixon from Avon, she says..
A-1 for a cup of coffee and Pour Corner for a cold beer.. Tolsma cove for a good meal. A-1 also has food. Gas and Go is what it called for a cup of coffee and a meal.. Rons Market is the grocery store in town.. They have good steaks to buy.
Another awesome place I need to mention is pretty much straight south of Avon, down on the river. Talsma’s Trail Park. They have a place you can take a four wheeler or even your horses down for a great ride through some absolutely beautiful river country. If you like the feeling of out west without going a long way, this is a GREAT spot. They had me down a few years ago and we did a personal trail ride that was a blast!
