An investigation is underway into the death of a Sioux Falls man whose apartment burned early Tuesday.

Police Information Officer Sam Clemens says 26-year-old Heath Deverne Westphal was removed from his apartment by Sioux Falls Fire Rescue crews who were called around 4am to a fire in an eight-unit apartment building at 1004 North Covell Avenue.

Clemens says police are leading the investigation, which includes arson investigators, police detectives and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

So far, the cause of the fire is under investigation, but Sioux Falls Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Travis Thom says the fire was in the kitchen and living area of the apartment.

A police investigation is standard procedure for an unattended death.
