Sioux Falls Downtown River Greenway Redevelopment Continues
An interactive water feature with unique spray nozzles that shoot streams of water rock to rock is the highlight of this phase of the River Greenway project.
Phase 2 redeveloped the east bank of the Big Sioux River from Eighth Street heading south to the railroad bridge. The project area consists of the eastern portion of the former River Ramp and surface parking lot site and is adjacent to the old Schoeneman’s Lumber Company site.
Phase 2 included flood walls, ADA accessible ramps to improve bike trail and river access, a 16-foot-wide bike and walking trail, along with extensive landscaping. Phase 2 also includes a bump-out into the river with a stepped edge down to the water.
The River Greenway redevelopment has been a major catalyst for private redevelopment downtown along the Big Sioux River. Another example of this is the new Hilton Garden Inn hotel construction happening adjacent to the Phase 2 project. Construction of the hotel started late in 2012 and will be completed later this year.
