SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A Sioux Falls businessman has been sentenced to nearly a year in federal prison for not paying more than $350,000 in taxes.

Forty-six-year-old Jared Adrian was indicted in 2012 for tax evasion, along with his father, Jerome Adrian. The two were sod dealers.

Jerome Adrian died last year, ending the case against him. Jared Adrian was sentenced Monday to 11 months in prison and ordered to pay his back taxes.

Prosecutors say Jared Adrian might have gotten a harsher punishment had he not cooperated in the prosecution of his father, who was part of a fringe group that believes the federal government has no taxation power.

Charges were dismissed earlier against a third suspect in the case.
