Scammers Targeting South Dakota Residents
The top two legal officials in South Dakota are warning of a scam that’s been targeting residents recently.
Chief Justice David Gilbertson and Attorney General Marty Jackley say residents have been contacted by callers who claim to be court employees and are seeking to collect payment and threaten legal action.
Gilbertson and Jackley say the caller asks for personal identifying information and credit card information, and they try to use the threat of court action in order to get it.
The two legal officials say the court system does not use the telephone to get private information from the public.
If you have been victimized, or need more information, you can call the State Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-300-1986 or go online at email@example.com.
Also, your local court can give information on whether you have an existing legal action or outstanding court debt.
