ROSEBUD, S.D. (AP) – The Rosebud Sioux Tribe is set to build a solid waste transfer station to improve trash collection from the reservation’s residents.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that the tribe has been awarded more than $1 million in loans and grants to help construct the facility.

USDA State Director for Rural Development Elsie Meeks says the Rosebud Sioux Tribe is currently transferring about 30 tons of garbage from the reservation’s 20 communities to the landfill in the northeast portion of the reservation. The landfill is equipped to handle about 20 tons of garbage a day.

Meeks says the new transfer station will be located closer to where the majority of the garbage is generated, minimizing trips to the landfill and dumpster overflow and helping with recycling efforts.
