Police and wildlife officials are using robotic deer to catch poachers – and it’s working.

Across the country they are teaming up with taxidermists to gain an advantage on illegal hunters.

A fake-deer is made, complete with remote control, and placed along highways. Then, it’s simply a game of waiting for officers nearby to make an arrest.

Shortly after one dummy deer was set up along a remote highway in Florida, Brent Russell Thompson stopped his vehicle and took a shot at the fake deer. He hit it in the neck and went to collect his game. That’s when federal wildlife officers, who were hiding nearby, arrested the man.

Thompson now faces charges including, shooting deer during closed season and discharging a firearm from a roadway. If convicted, he faces a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.

Federal Wildlife officers say safety is the biggest reason they are cracking down on illegal poaching.

State wildlife officials across the country have for several decades been rolling out roadside robot decoys to arrest illegal hunters, and the effort has paid off with hundreds of citations.

I’ve seen an individual shoot it with a 30-06 (rifle) and couldn’t figure out why it didn’t go down after he hit it five or six times. It can be really entertaining.”- Matt Briggs, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.

One robotic deer decoy used in Georgia had to be replaced after being shot more than 1,000 times.
