PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The South Dakota Board on Geographic Names is asking for input to come up with a new name for Squaw Creek in Moody County.

The name is considered offensive, and guidelines established by the U.S. Board of Geographic Names require that a new name be solicited.

The creek is near Trent.

Name suggestions may be descriptions of topography, local history or associated with natural life. A name can't duplicate another name in the state or nearby in an adjoining state. People have until Aug. 15 to submit suggestions.

Suggestions can be sent to the South Dakota Board of Geographic Names; Department of Tribal Relations; 302 East Dakota; Pierre, S.D. 57501.
