PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – A South Dakota fisheries biologist says stocked shad appear to be helping provide food for Lake Oahe walleyes in South Dakota and North Dakota.

Mark Fencel says about 1,800 adult shad were stocked in the reservoir last year and another nearly 1,700 were stocked this spring in sites in both states.

Fencel told the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission that that the shad apparently spawned successfully because anglers report finding small shad in the stomachs of walleye they catch.

The shad were stocked in an effort to boost the baitfish population in Lake Oahe after a lot of smelt were flushed through Oahe Dam in the 2011 flood.

Fencel says the smelt population appears to have recovered somewhat from last year.
