Remembering Lee Thompson Young: A Look Back at the Actor’s Life
Lee Thompson Young, the 29-year-old actor perhaps best known for his titular role in the Disney Channel series ‘The Famous Jett Jackson,’ committed suicide yesterday (Aug. 19). The actor, who currently played Detective Barry Frost on ‘Rizzoli & Isles,’ died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to TMZ.
“We are beyond heartbroken at the loss of this sweet, gentle, good-hearted, intelligent man,” Janet Tamaro, the executive producer of ‘Rizzoli & Isles,’ expressed to TMZ. “He was truly a member of our family. Lee will be cherished and remembered by all who knew and loved him, both on- and offscreen, for his positive energy, infectious smile and soulful grace.”
It is this warm presence and positivity that Young will be remembered for.
Though he hadn’t been active on Twitter for the past two years, Young tweeted frequently in the summer of 2011, always relaying positive messages and inspirational quotes, which were often peppered with smiley faces:
Wishing everyone out there a wonderful, refreshing, relaxing, lazy, lazy, lazy Sunday!
— Lee Thompson Young (@Lee_T_Young) September 4, 2011
The actor even took time out to comfort a follower going through a difficult time:
Hey @EmilysDope, nothing lasts forever, including bad times. Take heart, good times are on the way!

And, like he once did, stars far and wide are taking to the social media site to be there for one another, and to share their condolences on Young’s untimely passing:
My heart goes out to Lee Thompson Young RIP.. These child stars are leaving us too soon! My heart is aching…

So so so sad to hear about the death of Lee Thompson Young. RIP

While Young may have dealt with personal demons, it is obvious that he cherished the time spent on the set of ‘Rizzoli & Isles.’ He once tweeted:
I was off for two days, now back to set… You know you're blessed when you actually miss your coworkers
— Lee Thompson Young (@Lee_T_Young) June 30, 2011
And it is clear that the cast and crew of the TNT drama loved him back, as evidenced by this Instagram shot with Angie Harmon (Det. Jane Rizzoli), who captioned the below photo, “70′s detectives or Captain Morgan ad?”
Young showed promise at a tender age, landing the lead role in ‘The Famous Jett Jackson’ when he was just 14. Here, Young puts his child star skills to work in an episode of ‘Jett Jackson’ entitled ‘Kiss & Tell’:
Later, after filming movies such as ‘Friday Night Lights,’ Young showed off his natural good looks on ‘Scrubs,’ playing a surgical intern named Derek, who J.D. (Zach Braff) describes as a “male Hallee Berry”:
But perhaps nothing conveys Young’s vivaciousness and passion for acting quite like his up-close-and-personal, behind-the-scenes tour of the ‘Rizzoli & Isles’ set, as seen in the video below:
Rest in peace, Lee Thompson Young. We will miss you.
