Jon Constantine, Man Accused of Threatening Senator Tim Johnson, to Remain Jailed
PIERRE – A South Dakota Iraq war veteran accused of threatening U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson over the issue of gun control will remain jailed while his case proceeds.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean Berry said during a detention hearing Thursday that 28-year-old Jon Constantine has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and has stopped taking his medication.
Constantine is accused of posting a death threat March 16 on the Democratic senator’s Facebook page.
Judge John Simko ordered Constantine to remain in custody. The Piedmont man’s attorney says he’s looking for a secure facility where Constantine can get the mental help he needs.
Constantine faces up to five years in federal prison if convicted in federal court. His jury trial is scheduled to begin June 25.
