Jacks Rally Past Chicago State In Extra Innings
CHICAGO – After being stymied much of the day offensively, South Dakota State scored nine times in its final two at-bats to pull out a 10-6, 10-inning victory over Chicago State (Ill.) Saturday afternoon at Cougar Stadium.
In winning the series finale and taking the final two games of the three-game series, SDSU improved to 11-11 overall. Chicago State dropped to 10-9 on the season.
Trailing 4-1 entering the ninth inning, the Jackrabbits rallied for five runs to grab a 6-4 lead. Al Robbins led off with a double and Matt Johnson followed with a walk. Aaron Machbitz greeted reliever Aveeno Nasiloski with an infield single to load the bases. Two batters later, Tyler Shannon drew a walk to force in the first run of the inning. Zach Coppola followed with a two-run double to center field that knotted the game at 4-all. Eric Danforth plated the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly, and Coppola scored the final run of the inning on a throwing error.
The Jackrabbit lead was shortlived, however, as the Cougars battled back with a pair of runs to send a game to extra innings for the second time in the series. Jared Patterson led off with a double against Jackrabbit closer and later scored on the back end of a double steal. Jordan Stroschein’s third hit of the game, a two-out single to left field, scored Mattingly Romanin to extend the game.
SDSU countered with a four-run top of the 10th inning. Robbins again led off with a double and moved to third on a balk before scoring the eventual game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by Matt Johnson. The Jackrabbits tacked on three more runs after two outs thanks to wildness by the CSU pitching staff, starting with a two-run double by Jordan Varga that scored both Sam Pack and Tyler Shannon, who both walked. A bases-loaded walk – the fifth free pass issued by the Cougars in the inning – scored Coppola with the final run.
Talon Jumper pitched a scoreless bottom of the 10th inning to seal the Jackrabbit victory.
Chicago State scored in three consecutive innings to lead 4-1 through six innings. The Cougars scored twice in the fourth inning on a run-scoring double by Robert Swenson, with the second run scoring on an error. Romanin made it 3-0 Cougars with a solo home run.
SDSU got on the board in the top of the sixth inning on a run-scoring single by Zach Holt, but the Cougars answered in the home half of the frame with an RBI single by Patterson.
Jackrabbit starter Chris Anderson struck out four and walked two in seven innings. CSU starting pitcher Dan Mehring struck out six and did not walk a batter in six innings of work.
Machbitz was 3-for-5 to lead SDSU’s 10-hit attack, which included five doubles. Holt and Robbins each tallied two hits.
