Jacks Drop Series Finale To Mavericks 6-3

BROOKINGS, SD — Omaha broke a long scoring drought with a four-run fifth inning and held on for a 6-3 victory over South Dakota State in the finale of a four-game Summit League baseball series Sunday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.

In splitting the four-game series, Omaha improved to 23-19 overall and 8-8 in league play. SDSU dropped to 23-23 overall, 7-7 in The Summit League.

Starting pitchers Ryan Froom from the Jackrabbits and Zach Williamsen for Omaha matched zeroes through the first four innings. Froom, who was making his first collegiate start, struck out one and allowed only two hits through the first four innings. Williamsen, meanwhile, struck out five and also surrendered only two hits in his four-inning stint.

The Mavericks knocked Froom out of the game with back-to-back singles by Daniel Jewett and Cole Gruber to open the fifth. Tyler Splichal greeted Jackrabbit reliever with a single that plated both Jewett and Gruber, ending a streak of 21 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to Friday’s series opener. Danny Suiter followed with a two-run home run to left to make the score 4-0.

SDSU broke into the scoring column in the home half of the fifth on an RBI single by Zach Coppola that scored Al Robbins.

Omaha added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings on run-scoring singles by Clayton Taylor and Gruber. Gruber, who was held hitless through the first three games of the series, was 3-for-4 and stole three bases to lead the Mavericks’ 11-hit attack.

The Jackrabbits rallied for two runs in the eighth inning, drawing to within 6-3 on a two-run single by Sam Pack. SDSU brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but Omaha reliever Josh Bullock retired both batters he faced to earn his second save of the season and fifth save of the season.

Mitch Larson earned the victory for UNO, allowing one run over three innings of relief.

Coppola and Pack each tallied two of the Jackrabbits’ nine hits.

SDSU returns to action Friday, opening a four-game series against Summit League-leading Western Illinois. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Erv Huether Field.
