Our Christmas cheer took a blow when we learned beloved actors Jack Klugman and Charles Durning both died on Monday, Dec. 24.

Klugman, 90, died of natural causes in his Northridge, Calif. home. He was perhaps best known for his Emmy-winning role as slovenly sports writer Oscar Madison on TV’s ‘The Odd Couple’ between 1970 and 1975, and for eight years of playing the title character on ‘Quincy, M.E.’ Despite a battle with throat cancer in the 1980s, Klugman continued his career on TV and on stage in revivals of Neil Simon’s ‘The Sunshine Boys’ and in the original stage version of ‘The Odd Couple.’

NYC resident Durning, 89, was a recognizable character actor with a lengthy filmography that stretches back to the 1950s and includes two Academy Award nominations. You may remember him from his roles as Jessica Lange‘s father in ‘Tootsie’ and as Doc Hopper in 1979′s ‘The Muppet Movie,’ and more recently he played Denis Leary‘s dad on the series ‘Rescue Me.’ He will also appear in the upcoming film ‘Scavenger Killers.’

RIP, gentlemen, and a toast to you both. You’ll be missed.
