For the first two and a half quarters on Saturday night, the Iowa Energy looked like a team with only ten wins in their first 42 games played. By the end, Iowa (11-32) was the confident spoiler as the Energy came from 21 points down in the third quarter to slay the Sioux Falls Skyforce 96-89. Looking at the month of March specifically, Iowa has arguably been the better team with 4 wins while the Skyforce (22-20) only 1 victory so far in the month. However as a testament to the collective talent level and difficulty of navigating the NBA Development League schedule almost every win is a hard earned prize.
Sioux Falls asserted themselves early with a 21-point bulge built early in the third quarter. Then Iowa deemed it their time from the middle of the third quarter through the finish. A 28-7 run during the third period propelled the Energy to grab a brief lead by the end of the third quarter. A tie score at 73 early in the fourth period was the last time the two teams would be deadlocked as Iowa hit consecutive three point baskets to get some space then rode the wave to the end.
Justin Hurtt scored 24 for the second straight night to lead the Energy as Paul Harris (16/11) and Jarrid Famous (14/10) both captured double figures in points and rebounds. James Mays put together a 17 point 11 rebound night for Sioux Falls plus Andre Barrett had 17 points with Mychel Thompson adding 16 points. Next up for the Skyforce is a two game homestand with the Eastern Division leading Canton Charge on Friday and Saturday. Iowa meanwhile heads to RGV to face the Vipers on Thursday.
