Sioux Falls Wakes to Icy Roads
Our phone lines were very busy this morning with reports of very slippery conditions and several accidents.
Several reports from I 229 indicate at least 3 accidents with cars against the guardrail and others in the ditch. Sioux Falls police were busy handling those areas while other accidents were occurring at the same time.
Just west of Brandon on Rice Street was also reported to have a severe accident. Emergency personnel were on the scene.
A young lady who was on her way to Sioux Falls from Brookings said the traffic "all of a sudden" went from normal speeds to 5mph while traffic was reported to be at a"standstill" elsewhere on I 29.
Another severe accident is reported at Highway 11 in the 41st st. area. Said one caller, "It looks pretty bad". A witness to that accident posted this on our Facebook page:
We all listen to the radio, when Dan and Brian are saying slow down. Its not because they need something to say its because roads are slick. The speed limit is how fast you can go when roads and weather is prime. I witnessed the crash the truck passed me just before frankmans going well over 60 mph." - Facebook post at 7:32 am
By mid morning more cars were being towed from ditches along interstates. The Renner exit on I 29, also, Salem exit on I 90 reported tow trucks in action along with South Dakota Highway Patrol assisting with traffic.
We will continue to update as more reports come in. Thank you to the motorists keeping us informed.
