History Is Not On The Side Of The Jackrabbits As They Look For A Third Straight Summit League Tournament Crown

If third seeded South Dakota State is going to win a third straight Summit League Tournament Championship, they’ll have to buck a 20-year trend.

Over the past two decades, only a number one or two seed has won this event, and you really have to step into the ‘way back machine’ to find the last time a number three seed won the tournament.  The year 1985 and the team was Eastern Illinois.

The Jackrabbits quest for another crown starts Sunday night against Western Illinois at the Sioux Falls Arena.

SDSU finished off the regular season with a home sweep of Denver and South Dakota last weekend in Brookings.

Against the Pioneers Thursday, the Jackrabbits shot 61 percent in the second, extending a two point halftime lead into a nine point win.

Saturday’s regular season finale featured the 209th meeting between South Dakota State and South Dakota, and the Jacks started fast and never looked back, winning by 14 on senior day at Frost Arena.

The key to the Jack victory was a seven point lead in the first five minutes and sending USD center Trevior Gruis to the bench moments into the game with two quick fouls.

South Dakota State’s Summit League Tournament journey begins with Western Illinois Sunday night.  The Leathernecks shared the regular season crown with the Jacks in 2013, but lost some key players to graduation in the off-season.

WIU was just 4-10 in conference play this year, but they feature the top newcomer in the league this season in freshman Garret Covington, the fourth best scorer in the conference.

Coach Nagy knows the Leathernecks are dangerous despite their losing record:
