Hancock Homers, Cue Throws Shutout In Finale
MONROE, LA — South Dakota junior right fielder Morgan Hancock hit a three-run homer in the first inning and freshman Rachel Cue pitched a three-hit shutout as the Coyotes wrapped up the inaugural Warhawk Classic with a 3-0 win against Southern Sunday at Louisiana Monroe’s Softball Complex. USD was 3-2 at the tournament to improve to 8-5 overall.
Hancock’s homer was her second this season and the 14th of her career. Hancock drove in five runs during the Classic and has a team-best 14 RBIs in 13 games this season. Her .385 average is second on the team.
Cue (3-2) pitched her first collegiate shutout. She allowed singles in the third, fifth and sixth innings and struck out six while walking one. Cue threw more than 18 innings at the Classic. She had an ERA of 1.91 and had 14 strikeouts against 10 walks.
Yvon Minogue had USD’s other two hits against Southern starter Kayliegh Thomas. Coyote center fielder Katie Dinning had her 10-game hitting streak come to an end. Dinning was 0-for-3 against Thomas.
South Dakota is off next week. The Coyotes will return to the field March 7 in DeLand, Fla.
