Greg Sharpe Talks South Dakota State Win, Bye Week for Nebraska Cornhuskers

Things are pretty quiet around the Nebraska football program this week, as they enjoy a bye week before opening Big Ten play next week.

The Cornhuskers are 3-1 after beating South Dakota State, 59-20, last Saturday in Lincoln, but there are still plenty of question marks about this team after a month of the season.

The Husker defense gave up another big day to an opponent last week, as Jackrabbit running back Zach Zenner rolled up 202 yards on the ground.

There was plenty of offense in the quarter from both teams, with a combined 31 points, before Nebraska took over from there, outscoring SDSU 45-3 in the final three quarters.

The ‘Voice of the Cornhuskers’ Greg Sharpe told me he liked what he saw from both teams early on:

With starting quarterback Taylor Martinez sidelined with a turf toe injury, the Huskers rotated in Tommy Armstrong and Ron Kellogg at quarterback, and the offense didn’t miss a beat, racking up 645 yards.

Both backups rose to the occasion last weekend:

Nebraska’s defense continues to be far too generous this season, allowing 79 plays of ten yards or more (2nd worst in the nation) and a 63% pass completion rate from opponents (third worst in the Big Ten).

After the first quarter against SDSU, they increased the pressure up front, notching five sacks, while keeping the Jacks out of the end zone, but after the game, head coach Bo Pelini called it the worst performance of the season for the Nebraska defense:

So as the Huskers hit the ‘pause’ button on this season this week with the bye, it’s time to reflect.  I asked Greg who the big surprises are for this team so far after four games?

What a difference a week makes.

Last week there was plenty of angst and turmoil surrounding this team from on and off the field.  This week things are very quiet in Lincoln:

Nebraska opens Big Ten play at home with Illinois, next Saturday at 11:00am, in a game you can hear live on your home for Cornhusker football in the Sioux Empire, ESPN 99.1.
