Goihl’s Big Day Leads Vikings’ Over Hawks

KANSAS CITY, MO — Augustana closed out its six-game road trip in style on Wednesday, winning 9-6 over Rockhurst. The Vikings improved to 7-6 on the season with the win, while keeping the Hawks winless at 0-6.

Jack Goihl led the way for the Augustana with a huge afternoon, going 4 for 5 with four RBI, and belting his second home run of the year. Goihl’s four hits and four RBI both tied his career high.

Michael Letkewicz (2-0) recorded his second win this season, going 2.2 innings, while striking out six and giving up just one hit.

Derek Quame picked up his second save of 2014, coming in the ninth and closing out the game.

The Vikings’ pitching staff was wheeling and dealing on Wednesday, getting a season-high 14 strikeouts against Rockhurst.

The Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a hot start in the top of the first inning. Jacob James and Marcus O’Neill walked to start the game, followed by a Tony Viger single to juice the bases with Alex Fink up. Augustana would hit into a 6-4-3 double play but scored one run on the play. Kye Winter capped off the fast start with a double to right center that drove in Goihl from second base.

Rockhurst scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning on three hits. Michael Willman Jr. worked his way out a bases-loaded jam with two outs, getting Derrick Jones to ground out to second base to end the inning leaving three Hawks on base.

O’Neill made it a 4-2 game in the top of the second, getting a two-out single to left field that scored Josh Benson from third base and pushed the Viking lead to two.

Augustana added to its lead in the top of the third after Goihl sent a two-run bomb over the right center wall, making it 6-2 after Viger walked to lead off the inning. For Goihl, it was his second jack of the season.

The Vikings increased their lead to five at 7-2 in the top of the fourth inning after O’Neill singled through the left side to score Jake Petersen, who led off the inning with a walk, in from second. Goihl made it 8-2 a few batters later with and single to right that scored O’Neill from second base.

The Hawks loaded up the bases again in the bottom of the fourth, but brought only one run across home plate to make it a six-run Augustana lead after Letkewicz came in to relieve Willman with one out. Letkewicz walked in a run to start his day, but struck out the final two Hawk batters to close out the inning.

Letkewicz made quick work of Rockhurst in the bottom of the sixth, retiring the side. The Waterloo, Iowa native notched his sixth strikeout of the game after sitting down Brett Marr on strikes for the second out.

The Vikings would tack on one run in the top of the seventh, making it 9-3 after James singled to left center field with two outs that drove in Bryce Berg from third base.

Colton Fast, in for Letkewicz, got out a jam in the bottom of the seventh inning after getting Rockhurst to hit into a 4-6-3 double play with one out and runners on first and second to end the inning, keeping the score 9-3 in favor of Augustana.

The Hawks tried to get a late-game rally going by scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it 9-6. The Hawks got the three runs on four hits before Troy Pilkington struck out Blake Petersen to end the rally.

Quame entered in the bottom of the ninth to close the game out. The senior from Eagle Lake, Minn. struck out the first batter he faced, then loaded the bases before putting the game to bed with a strikeout of Brett Marr to give the Vikings the 9-6 victory.
