God Bless All The Night Owls
A big shout-out to all those who labor away overnight while the rest of society is fast asleep in their warm, cozy beds. The second Wednesday in May is always National "Night Shift Workers Day" or "Third Shift Workers Day."
Being one of those who has to drive to work in the wee hours of the morning, I'm amazed at how our fair little city has changed over the years. Back in the fall of 1984, when I first started working here in Sioux Falls (yes I know, I'm old), I would maybe see a couple of other cars on the road. Most days, though, it was just me. Today, it's nothing to cross paths with dozens of other drivers. Sometimes, I even have to wait through an entire traffic light cycle - I know, can you believe it?
I've also noticed over the years that the number of businesses that stay open all night has increased. Back in '84, about the only place that was open at 3:30 in the morning was Dixie's Bakery just West of 10th and I-229. Now, it's amazing how many places are all lit up and open for business.
I guess that just goes to show how our little city has grown in size - and continues to grow. When you actually realize you're not the only one crazy enough to hold down a job where you have to get up in the middle of the night, that's a sign of progress! God bless the "night owls."
