Fort Pierre Butterfly Collector Finds Subspecies
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - A Fort Pierre butterfly collector has helped identify a new subspecies.
Gary Marrone tells the Capital Journal that he collected Mormon fritillaries in the Black Hills that looked different than those in Colorado and Wyoming.
Marrone got the privilege of collaborating in the subspecies' first scientific description and give it its name - Lakota fritillary.
Marrone started collecting butterflies as a hobby back in the 1970s. He spent his career working for the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department, first as a trapper and later in fisheries management.
Marrone's book, "Field Guide to Butterflies of South Dakota," was published by the department in 2001. At the time, a total of 177 species of butterflies were known in South Dakota. Two more have since been documented.
