Explosion in Kansas City [VIDEO]
More than 14 people were injured and — at least three critically — when a gas explosion ignited a Kansas City restaurant on Tuesday evening.
As of Wednesday morning 2 people were unaccounted for.
UPDATE: Kansas City Fire Chief Paul Berardi said early Wednesday that a man who was reported missing was found at St. Luke’s Hospital receiving treatment. He says there has been no sign of the female employee since the explosion Tuesday evening at JJ’s restaurant on the Country Club Plaza. They expected crews to be working through the morning.
Prior to the explosion, people had complained about the strong smell of gas.
The restaurant, JJ’s, had shut down their kitchen just prior to the blast and inspectors from the gas company warned people to leave the restaurant shortly before the building exploded, just before 6 p.m. local time.
Fox4KC.com reports that witnesses said the explosion was like an earthquake. The station said there were reports of blown-out windows and minor damage inside apartments near the blast.
Although the cause of the explosion is still unknown at this time, it is said that witnesses believe that an accident involving a utility contractor may have caused the blast.
Initially Kansas City police had said the blast had been caused by a car crashing into a gas main. Fire and city officials later said they were not aware of a crash being involved in the blast.
